October 26, 2009

Dear Parents,

Happy Halloween!  Friday will be a very exciting day, and we’ll learn a little while having a lot of fun in the classroom.  Remember, your children can wear their costumes to school and if they want to play the games, you must send $5.00 to school with your child by Friday to purchase tickets.

In Religion last week we finished learning how the 4th, 5th and 6th commandments help us to respect and love our neighbors.  This week we will learn about our last 4 commandments, the 7th, 8th, 9th and 10th.

In Science this week we will begin thinking about our Science Projects, and each of your children will search for a question he or she may want to investigate. In fourth grade our Science project questions tend to be simple so that the focus of this project is on learning and carrying out the steps of the Scientific Method.  Please help reach agreement with your child about his or her question since you will be carrying out the experimentation piece at home.

In next week’s letter I will send home the Science Fair due dates.  We’ll be working with the mobile computer lab to complete all the word processing that will be placed on your children’s display boards.  Your children will complete much of this work in class.

In Math last week many of your children mastered their division math facts with 100% accuracy in three minutes.  In the beginning of this week we will continue with division facts.  The Chapter 6 test will be tomorrow.  I am sending home Math textbooks tonight.  Please use pages 136 and 137 and the practice test to help your child study.

In Reading last week we read a very amusing, modern fairy tale called The Horned Toad Prince. This week we will be reading a narrative nonfiction story, Letters from Yosemite.  Your children will learn that identifying the main idea and supporting details can help them comprehend more of what they read.

This week your children will be preparing to talk to you about what they have already learned in fourth grade at our conference next week.  Because your children will play an integral role, they must accompany you to our conference.  I have scheduled our conference to last 20 minutes.  If there is anything that you would like to discuss alone, we will have the opportunity at the end of the conference.  All of your children know that I will ask you if you would like to discuss anything alone once they are finished with their presentation.

Tomorrow in the Tuesday envelope, there will be a letter stating the time of our conference. Your children will be discussing their goals from the yellow Goal Progress cards.  Please send these cards to school with your child tomorrow if you haven’t already. If you have a conflict with your scheduled time, please contact me this week so that we can reschedule.

Your child’s Social Studies test is in this packet.  Please take some time to review it with your child.  If you have any questions or concerns, please drop by the classroom, phone school or email me at triciaheis@aol.com.  I look forward to seeing you next week.

Sincerely,

Tricia Heissenbuttel

Dear Parents,

This week in Religion, your children will continue to learn about the 4th, 5th and 6th Commandments and discover ways in which they can follow them as fourth graders.

In Math last week, we worked hard to improve our speed and accuracy with our multiplication facts.  Most of your children have reached their goal of completing 80 math facts accurately and quickly.  If you notice when looking through this packet that your child has not mastered these facts, please continue to work with them at home.  These are crucial stepping-stones for the upcoming concepts and skills that they will be learning this year. This week we will begin the same process with the division facts.  Please help your child by practicing these at home.

In Social Studies this week we will finish Unit 1 by learning about urban, suburban, and rural areas.  This Friday we will have our test on Unit 1, California’s geography.  Please use Unit 1 of the Social Studies books to help your child study.

This week in Science we will begin learning about Geology: specifically minerals, how we identify them, and how they are useful to us. The Science test is in this packet; please review it with your child.

Please return your parent teacher conference appointment request form by Wednesday, October 21 if you have not already done so.  I will be working on Thursday to schedule these.  Please check as many times that you can attend as possible so that I can accommodate all of you.  Because your children will be leading much of the conference, I will be scheduling our conference to last 20 minutes.

Next Friday is our Halloween Carnival and your children can wear their costumes to school.  We have discussed the costume guidelines in class.  Please make sure that all costumes are appropriate.  If your child’s costume is cumbersome, please send your child in their uniform or partially dressed in their costume and they can change into the full costume before the parade.  Don’t forget to send $5.00 to school with your children so they can play the carnival games in the afternoon.

Please send the blue goal cards on which you have been tracking your children’s progress toward reaching their goals by this Friday.  Since your child will be conducting a portion of this conference, they will need this card to prepare next week.

Thank you to all of you who returned your BINGO surveys.  After review all of your responses, if seems as if two dates will work for most of you:  Saturday, February 20 and Saturday, March 20.  Please mark your calendars to attend one or both of these nights.  Thank` you very much for supporting our class and providing great fieldtrip opportunities for your children.

Please review with your children their work of the past week.  If you have any questions or concerns, please drop by, call me at school, or e-mail me at triciaheis@aol.com.  Thanks again for all your support.

Sincerely.

Tricia Heissenbuttel
