Band Recital on Friday: remember to bring music and instrument
Dear Parents,
How blessed we were on Friday’s trip to San Juan Bautista, and what a wonderful time we had! The rain held off until it was time to drive home, and your kids were very engaged and learned a lot. Many, many thanks to our drivers and chaperones: Mr. and Mrs. Cincu, Mrs. Fujii, Mr. Aritharan, Mrs. Carmona, Mrs. Decker, Mrs. Ferrante, Mrs. Arreola, Mrs. Patterson, Mrs. O’Boyle, Mr. Tumangan, and Mrs. Liedholm. Because we had so many volunteers, your children were VERY well looked after and learned a lot.
In our mission unit, we arrived in Monterey last Wednesday and each crew paid their duty. This week, we will begin to trade. In order to sail up and down the coast of California to trade with the missions, your children will have to answer questions. These are the same questions that will be on our test on Thursday, so I expect your children to be very well prepared for this test. To help your children study, use the background sheets and outlines in their mission booklets. These will be in their homework folders all week.
This week in Math we will begin Chapter 12, Dividing Greater Numbers. We will finish this chapter after Christmas break. Your child’s Chapter 11 test is in this packet. Please review it with your child.
On Wednesday, your children will have the Science test on Chapter 3, “Rocks and Minerals.” They will bring home their Science books tonight and tomorrow night so that you can use it and their study packets to help them study.
If you are not traveling over vacation, this could be a great time to help your child gather the science project results. If your child is testing with plants, I hope that you have already started or plan to begin very soon. Remember, the results are due on January 30th.
And of course, Thursday night is a very exciting night for our fourth graders because they will be performing for the first time in our Christmas musical, “A Christmas Carol.” Please make sure that your child is in the classroom by 6:30. This will allow plenty of time for those who have costumes to change into them. Everyone else should wear dressy holiday clothes. The performance will begin at 7:00.
There will be no Spelling this week. This is my last letter of the year 2009 so have a wonderful Christmas holiday. I feel very lucky to be working with such supportive families that truly want the best for their kids. See you in 2010.
Love,
Tricia Heissenbuttel

Dear Parents,
Last week in Religion we prepared for Advent by thinking about how Jesus came to earth and became human just like us. We learned how Jesus is the Light of the World and how we can share His Light with others when we are kind, caring, generous and loving (when we choose to live as He did). We talked about how Jesus is no longer living as a human among us so he asks us to use our hands to do his work on Earth. We also chose from the San Jose Mercury News Wishbook who we will be reaching out to during this Advent Season. Your children decided to reach out to Pathways Kids Program, a hospice service that caters to children. They were very touched by the story of a little girl named Ella whose family relied on Pathways through a very difficult time. If you are interested in learning more about Ella’s story and Pathways good work, here is the link, http://www.mercurynews.net/wishbook. Although you are also welcome to join us in this Reach-Out project, it is important that a part of the donation comes directly from your children.
In Family Life this week we will explore how every member of a family depends on one another and can help each other to grow in love. Even though God have given us the gift of free will, we learned that rules are also important in our families, schools, communities and the Church.
In Math, we are continuing Chapter 11, Multiplying by Two Digit Numbers. This can be a difficult topic for a fourth grader and some of your children might need extra help on this at home. On Wednesday your children will take their chapter 11 test. You can use pages 248 and 250 and the practice test to help your child prepare.
In Science last week your children learned all about igneous and sedimentary rocks. This week they will explore the rock cycle and how metamorphic rocks are formed. Next week we will have a test on chapter 3, “Rocks and Minerals.”
In our California Missions unit, we will soon arrive in Monterey. Later this week, each crew will pay their duty and soon, they will begin to trade. In order to sail up and down the coast of California to trade with the missions, your children will have to answer questions. These are the same questions that will be on our test next Thursday, so I expect your children to be very well prepared for this test. If you would like to help your children study, use their mission booklets. These will be in their homework folders all week.
On Friday, we will be going to Mission San Juan Bautista. Below is the schedule for the day.
8:45- leave school
9:45- arrive at the mission and meet in the plaza
10:00 self-guided tour in groups to complete a scavenger hunt in the Mission and State Park
12:00- eat lunch on the plaza
12:30- play the “Mission Game” with a museum docent
1:30- finish self-guided tour in groups to complete the
scavenger hunt in the Mission and State Park
2:00- return to school
3:10- arrive at school
Your children must bring a bag lunch and wear their uniforms to school. This is a very authentic mission and we are looking forward to a great day. Again, I would like to thank you if you volunteered to drive and chaperone. More information about the day will be sent home to chaperones later this week.
Our Christmas Musical, “A Christmas Carol,” is next Thursday night at 7:00 in the parish hall. All of your children should report to the classroom by 6:30. Children who have specific roles and are wearing special costumes should bring them to school by this Thursday. All of your children who are in the chorus should wear dressy holiday clothes to school the night of the performance.
Gilda, our class gecko, needs a home over vacation. She is very low maintenance. If you and your child are interested in babysitting Gilda, please send a note to school.
Is your child’s 2nd quarter yellow goal sheet being displayed in your home where everyone can see it? Your children should be writing the date on the lines every time that they do something to reach their goal. We can help them to be successful if we discuss and remind them often about their goals. Thanks for your support in this.
The fourth grade will be shopping at Santa’s Secret Shop tomorrow, so please make sure that your child has a list of who to buy gifts for if they wish to participate. Please review the attached papers with your children. If you have any questions or concerns, please drop by, call me at school, or e-mail me at triciaheis@aol.com. Thanks again for all your support.
Sincerely,
Tricia Heissenbuttel
