Dear Parents,

Your children were wonderful in Geology Rocks! They really were so dramatic and confident, and I was incredibly proud of them. Thanks to the hard work of a group of moms, Mrs. Ventura, Mrs. O’Boyle, Mrs. Nguyen (Elizabeth’s mom), Mrs. Kimm, Mrs. Canjura and Mrs. Kim (Jae Hoon’s mom), who volunteered their time we had a gorgeous backdrop! Thank you ladies for making our musical even more special. I would again like to extend a huge thank you to Mrs. Kama Belloni. How lucky we are to have such a talented and dedicated music teacher who helps provide so much fun and learning. It was wonderful to see so many of your faces in the audience. Both your children and I greatly appreciate your constant support. If any of you digitally recorded it, I would love a copy for school so I can show the kids how wonderful they were. Thanks!

In Religion last week we learned how Jesus asks all of us to be forgiving. We explored the Parable of the Unforgiving Servant which demonstrates the meaning of the phrase “forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us” in the Lord’s Prayer. Like the king in the parable, God always forgives us. We are called to forgive others with the same generosity that God show us.

In Math last week we began our unit on geometry. This unit is full of new vocabulary, so while we are working on this unit, your children are making concentration cards that they will keep in their homework folders. You can use these with your child along with the ideas that are in the letter attached to this packet to help your child do well and learn more geometry. Friday we will have our chapter 25 test. Please use the practice test and pages 574 to 576 in the textbook to help your child study. The probability and statistics test is in this packet. Please review it with your child.

This week in Science, we will learn about parallel and series circuits and about how circuit breakers and fuses help us keep us safe.

Last week in Social Studies your children received the topic and group that they will be working on for their Gold Rush powerpoint project. This week they will complete the bulk of our work. Each of your children is responsible for gathering research and presenting two slides. In order to help your child you can ask about their topic and help them gather research and photos from the internet. The rubric that I will be using to grade your child is in their writing folder.

This Wednesday the Cupertino Historical Museum’s “Traveling Trunk” will be coming to the fourth grade. Two women from the historical museum will be sharing antiques and stories from Cupertino’s earliest days. Below is a link to an article about this wonderful program: http://mytown.mercurynews.com/archives/cupertinocourier/03.24.99/cover-9912.html

Next Wednesday, May 5, we will be going to Intel for a tour of their museum and to do an experiment about circuits and switches. This is perfect timing because we are just beginning to learn about circuits this week. We will need drivers and chaperones and would love to have many of you join us. We will be leaving school at 9:00 and returning by 12:00. Your children will be able to buy hot lunch on this day and will wear their uniforms to school. Your children have the permission slip for this fieldtrip in their homework folders. Please return them to school with your child by this Thursday.

Please review with your children their work. If you have any questions or concerns, please drop by, call me at school or email me at triciaheis@aol.com. Thank you for your continued support.

Sincerely,
Tricia Heissenbuttel

Dear Parents,

In Religion last week we learned about how Jesus was resurrected and when he appeared to his friends after his death on the cross. Our Church is now in the Easter Season, and these events remind us that Jesus gave each of us the gift of new life. Throughout the 50 days of the Easter Season, we give praise and thanks to God for this great gift that his Son gained for us.

In Math we have been conducting probability experiments using spinners and dice on our digital whiteboard. Thursday will be our chapter 24 test. Please use the practice test and pages 550 and 551 in the textbook to help your child study.

This week the bank of 12 new laptops for the upper grade courtyard is in our room. On these laptops your children will learn how to create and present a Powerpoint presentation about the Gold Rush. Each child in a group will be responsible for gathering research for two slides, choosing key facts and photos for his or her slides, and sharing details that are not on the slide with the class. This will be an invaluable tool for them as they move through the grades.

Our “Geology Rocks” performance is this Friday, April 23 at 2:00 in the Parish Hall. We hope to see many of you there. Your children should wear the following colors for their costume. They should bring costumes to school on Thursday for our dressed rehearsal.
Ferns- green Holmes, Watson- British clothing Sea Shore- tan
Rocks- brown Robbie, Jen- kids clothes Valley- pink
Volcanoes- red, orange, yellow Professor Rock- hiking gear Canyons- reds
Mountains- gray, white Snow White- frilly dress Earth- blue and green
Rappers- baseball cap and big chains

Most of you have had your “At Home Conference” with your children already. If you haven’t, please make time tonight to sit with your child so that together, you can talk about his or her progress. Try to focus on their strengths and on only one thing to improve. Maybe you can choose a skill that they may need in fifth grade. Please return the report cards and yellow conference sheets to school by tomorrow, April 20.

Last Wednesday your children received April’s Scholastic Book orders. All orders will be due by this Thursday. Remember, you can use the form and send a check made out to Scholastic Books to school (please do not send cash) or you can order online using the following information. It really is very simple to order online, and our class receives a free book each time one of your orders in this way. You can also find a link to the Scholastic website by going to my website:(http://sjcschool.org/blogs/grade4/).

Lastly, I would like to thank all of you for completing the homework survey. Most of you marked that there is just the right amount of homework. Out of the 18 surveys that were returned by Friday, 14 of you marked “just right,” one parent marked “too much” and three marked on the “too little” side. After reviewing all your comments and Xs, it seems to me that the amount of homework should remain about the same. Please remember, it is ALWAYS ok for you to write a note on those nights that are just too busy and complete work the next night or over the weekend. If you have any questions or comments about your child’s specific needs, don’t hesitate to stop by.

You truly make me feel lucky to be working with such wonderful families. If you have any questions or concerns please drop by, or e-mail me at triroemer@aol.com.

Sincerely, Tricia Roemer
