Dear Parents,
This week, we begin unit three in Family Life, God’s Gift of Life. We will explore the life cycle from conception and birth to death. The focus will be that life is a gift from God to be cared for through our healthy choices. Please take some time to review the parent packet for this unit that is stapled behind this letter and to talk to your children about these themes. Our unit for next week will be God’s Gift of Love, and the dialogue that you begin this week will help to make next week’s conversations flow a bit more smoothly and easily.
Last week your child decorated clay pots, andthis week they will plant flowers in them. These will be Mother’s Day gifts for moms who are struggling. Many thanks to our Reach Out moms who organized all of this so that our children could have the experience of reaching out to those in need.
The May Crowning is Thursday, May 17. Remember all children are expected to attend this event to honor Mary. Please don’t forget to send a note if your child is unable to attend. To honor Mary, we will collect layette items to help mothers who have less than we do. If you would like to donate items, you can send them to school with your child over the next two weeks.
In Math last week we conducted probability experiments using spinners and dice on our digital whiteboard. Tomorrow will be our chapter 24 test. Please use the practice test and pages 550 and 551 in the textbook to help your child study.
In Science we are beginning to learn about magnetism. The children discovered that all magnets have two poles, a north and a south like our Earth. They also learned how magnets help us find direction when we use a compass.
In Social Studies this week your children will finish our unit on the Gold Rush. We will have our test on Wednesday. Your children can use their Gold Rush booklets to study for this test.
Your children have really grown to be strong communicators this year. Not only did they do a great job with their Science Fair presentations and in “Geology Rocks,” they also really impressed me when they presented their Gold Rush PowerPoint presentations to the class.
Many thanks to Mrs. Ereno, Mr. Smith, Mrs. Kim, Mrs. Wirnowski, Mr. Koering, Mrs. Miller, Mrs. Serafini, Mrs. Tsang, Mrs. Zuo and Mrs. Koker (Larkin’s grandma) who drove and chaperoned on our field trip to Intel. Your children had a great time and learned a lot building many different types of series and parallel circuits.
Thanks again for all of your support. Education works best when it is a team effort; I feel very blessed to have such wonderful “teammates” in the education of your children. If you have any questions or concerns, please drop by or e-mail me at triciaheis@sjcschool.org.
Sincerely, Tricia Heissenbuttel
