Math 6: Chapter 9 – Geometric Figures

The 6th Grade Math Class has moved into studying geometric figures. We will start with an introduction to geometry and then we will move onto measuring and classifying angles (acute, right, obtuse, straight). Then we will learn about angle relationships (vertical, adjacent, complementary, and supplementary) and find angle measures.

In the second part of the chapter we will examine polygons. We will classify polygons, in particular we will spend time on triangles (by sides: scalene, isosceles, and equilateral; and by angles: acute, obtuse, and right) and quadrilaterals (parallelogram, rectangle, rhombus, square, trapezoid). We will finish the chapter by looking at congruent figures.

The big ideas in this chapter are:

  • Students will be able to determine the relationship between angles and describe these relationships.
  • Students will be able to use facts about angles and triangles to find unknown angle measures.
  • Students will be able to draw triangles and quadrilaterals that fit a given description.

Math 7: Chapter 9 – Two-Dimensional Geometry

The 7th grade has moved into a chapter on two-dimensional geometry. They started with perimeter and area and examined parallelograms, triangles, and trapezoids. They also looked at circles. They learned about terminology for circles (i.e. arc, central angle, chord, circle, center of a circle, diameter, radius, sector)

This week they are going to study circumference (i.e. the distance around a circle) and area (i.e. the amount of space inside of a circle). Then they will put it all together and look at the area of composite and irregular figures.

The big ideas for this chapter are:

  • Students will be able to learn formulas for the perimeter and are of figures that have length and width.
  • Students will be able to divide geometric figures intro familiar shapes such as rectangles, triangles, and parts of circles.
  • Students will be able to learn the names and properties of parts of circles.
  • Students will be able to draw figures on a graph to find out measurements from the graph.

History: Chapter 15 – Manifest Destiny and the Growing Nation

In Chapter 15 the students will answer the question, “How justifiable was U.S. expansion in the 1800s?”

In the preview assignment, the students will describe how they would change a historical event of their own selection.

In the activity, the students will debate what the U.S. should have done in five key territorial acquisitions and use a floor map to show how these decisions might have impacted population.

In the processing assignment, the students will annotate a famous historical painting with the speech or thoughts of the characters represented.

Religion: Chapter 13 – Reforming the Church

We have started studying the fourth unit of the religion book titled “Reason, Rebellion, and Reform”. In Chapter 13 we will study the Protestant Reformation and the Catholic Church’s response, the Counter-Reformation.  The focus of the chapter is that true reform begins with each person’s heart as he or she seeks God’s truth. The students will learn about Martin Luther, Saint Thomas More, Saint Teresa of Avila and Saint John of the Cross.

Religion: Family Life Unit 3 – God’s Gift of Life

The 8th grade class has finished a unit in Family Life. We studied Chapters 5 & 6.

Chapter 5 is about “The Value of Life”. This chapter helped the students recall the importance of showing respect for God’s gift of life, examine the many threats to the value of life, and practice witnessing to the value of life.

Chapter 6 is about “Staying Healthy”. This chapter help the students explore the impact of good health choices on their future growth, practice good health habits, and understand the importance of caring for their spiritual well being.

Math 8: Chapter 10 – Measurement, Area, and Volume

Since the last blog update, the 8th grade math class moved into a chapter on measurement, area, and volume. We started by working with triangles, finding the missing measures of triangles, and computing the missing sides of triangles. We followed that up with polygons and quadrilaterals. We reviewed circumference and area of circles and then we moved into surface area and volume of prisms, cylinders, pyramids, and cones. We will take the test for Chapter 10 this Friday.

Math 6: Chapter 8 – Probability

The 6th grade class will start a chapter on probability soon. They will start with an introduction to probability and will learn how to classify events as: impossible, unlikely, as likely as not, likely, or certain. They will also study what a complement is in terms of probability. Then, the class will experience the difference between experimental probability and theoretical probability.

The class will also look into sample space (i.e. how to graphically display all outcomes), disjoint events (i.e. events that cannot happen at the same time), independent and dependent events (i.e. events that do not depend and depend on, respectively, on what happened before), and making predictions (i.e. using experimental probability to make guesses).

The big ideas for this chapter are:

  • Students will be able to list the outcomes of compound events.
  • Students will be able to find the theoretical probability of each outcome.
  • Students will be able to write probabilities in different forms.
  • Students will be able to find the probability of disjoint events and independent events.
  • Students will be able to determine whether a set of events is independent or dependent.

Math 7: Chapter 8 – Foundations of Geometry

The seventh grade class has ventured away from graphs and functions and has started a chapter on plane geometry. We will identify points, lines, planes, and angles. We will look at geometric relationships (parallel, perpendicular, & skew lines; and parallel & perpendicular planes). We’ll examine angle relationships (adjacent, vertical, alternate interior, alternate exterior, and corresponding angles). Then we will study triangles, coordinate geometry, congruent polygons, and transformations (slides, reflections, and rotations). The lesson on tessellations will be extra credit on the test for the chapter.

History: Chapter 14 – Andrew Jackson and the Growth of American Democracy

In Chapter 14 the students will answer the question, “How well did President Andrew Jackson promote democracy?”

In the preview assignment, the students will view and discuss an image of President and Mrs. Washington at a presidential reception.

In the activity, the students will analyze and bring to life images of key events in the presidency of Andrew Jackson to evaluate how well he promoted democracy from the perspectives of four groups (the rich and well born, the common man, state’s rights supporters, and Native Americans).

In the processing assignment, the students will commemorate Jackson’s impact on American society by creating a hero’s plaque and a “wanted” poster.

Religion: Chapter 12 – Devotions

In Chapter 12 8th grade will learn about popular devotions. Fr. Greg came in to talk to the 8th grade about devotions, pilgrimages, and relics on 2/24. The 8th grade enjoyed his visit.

In Chapter 12 we will learn about the merits of Catholic devotions, The Imitation of Christ, and the rise of devotional practices and mendicant orders. The students will also examine the role of private devotion in Catholic life, learn about the history of the Rosary, and develop knowledge of other devotional practices.
