During the Fall Appeal we focus on our Development (endowment) Fund. During this Spring Appeal, we focus on our SCHOLARSHIP FUNDS. We have four Memorial Scholarship Funds:

The Donna Brock Memorial Scholarship Fund was initiated in 2011 at the suggestion of our SJC staff and families. Mrs. Brock served our parish as Director of Religious Education beginning in 1991. She later became the teacher of our school’s Advanced Math program, helping us to grow from one course offered to 8th grade algebra students to a full-time program for Grades 4-8. Donna died very suddenly during Christmas Eve Mass at SJC in 2010. Donna’s love for our faith, for our parish, for our school, and for our children inspired us all. This Scholarship Fund is a fitting tribute to her goodness and generosity.

The Dick Caldwell Memorial Scholarship Fund was initiated in 2005 in honor of a dedicated and longtime parishioner, who was also a school parent and grandparent. Dick was the ultimate Holy Name Society Member who “ran” Bingo for years. We all looked up to him and admired his love of our community.

The Father Leo Rooney Memorial Scholarship Fund was one of our original memorial funds; it was established following Fr. Leo’s death in 1997. Fr. Leo served as our pastor here at SJC. He died of lung cancer at the age of 49.

The Nick Kelly Memorial Scholarship Fund was created in memory of a beloved sixth grade student who died in February 2001, following a fatal automobile accident.

All four of these funds support our St. Joseph of Cupertino Financial Aid Program, and our financial aid program is a key component of our Catholic Identity. We are called to be a support to families when they are experiencing struggles. Through your generosity we are able to keep our doors open to these families until they are “back on their feet” again. Please look over the enclosed information packet. If you are in the financial position to help others who are struggling, please consider making a gift to one or more of these Scholarship Funds.

Our SJC Team participated in the Diocese of San Jose’s Academic Decathlon on March 3rd and for the second year in a row, we were awarded: First Place !!!

It was such an exciting afternoon. The day started off with a team event, the Logic Quiz, which contains extremely difficult “brain teaser” type questions. Our team took Second Place. Then our students went off and took individual tests in eight subject areas. We won First Place in Math, First Place in English, Second Place in Current Events, and Third Place in Literature. Then we returned to the Mitty Gym for the Super Quiz team event, which is made up of 50 challenging questions in the areas of religion, science, social studies, fine arts, and literature. After a “nail-biting” tie-breaker, SJC was awarded First Place in the Super Quiz. At the end of the day, after all of these ribbons and medals were presented, there was only one category left to be announced … the Winner of the San Jose Diocesan Academic Decathlon. Third Place went to St. Victor’s; Second Place was presented to Queen of Apostles; and First Place was awarded to SJC!

We are so proud of our Academic Decathletes, and so grateful to our dedicated parent coaching staff. The team competed in eight individual subject area competitions and two team competitions (8+2 = 10 = Decathlon), and won ribbons and medals in most of the areas.

We also want to acknowledge the 7th Graders who served as alternates. They, too, had to study the material in preparation for the event and attend all practice sessions. They are now well-prepared for next year’s team (most of this year’s team served as alternates last year):

The SJC Team will be representing the Diocese of San Jose in the State Finals, which will be held in Southern California in May. So their work is not done. They have two more months of studying ahead of them. We know they will represent our Diocese, our school, their families, and themselves proudly in every way – in academic excellence and effort, in school spirit, in positive enthusiasm, and as gracious competitors.

On their retreat day this past January, the seventh grade visited the Boccardo Homeless Shelter in San Jose. During this day the students were encouraged to “open their eyes” to the people in need around them, challenged to “open their eyes” to see past the myths of homelessness, and inspired to “open their eyes” to God’s call for us to help in any way we can.

In response to all that the 7th grade students learned, the class decided to have a drive to help support Boccardo Homeless Shelter.

*The Shelter is in desperate need of men’s size white socks and laundry detergent!

*Monetary donations will go towards the purchase of laundry detergent. The detergent is given to the clients of the shelter so they can wash their clothes.

FACTS ABOUT HOMELESSNESS

There are 7000 homeless people in the Santa Clara County.

About 40% of homeless men are veterans.

Jim Carrey, Halle Berry, and many more celebrities were once homeless.

Anyone can become homeless!

Donations are being collected now! “Socks and Suds” Drive will end on Wednesday, February 15th
