Performing Arts

About

The music and performing arts program at SJC is an important facet of the "whole child" approach to education and learning.

While at SJC your child has the opportunity to experience the joy of the performing arts in a safe and supportive community which emphasizes creative expression in a fun and nurturing environment.  Opportunities include but are not limited to:

  • Grade-level classroom musicals and plays which integrate with the science, language arts or social studies curriculum for that grade level.

  • Grade-specific music history and appreciation topics (History of Rock, Instruments of the Orchestra, Survey of American Musical Theatre.)

  • School wide audition and performance opportunities such as the annual school-wide Christmas Musical and Talent Show.

  • Classroom Recorder curriculum in Grade 3

  • School Band instruction with ensembles at the beginning, intermediate and advanced levels.

  • Ministry service opportunities  (Cantoring, Liturgical Dance, Lectoring.)

  • Field Trip opportunities to local community productions to experience plays and musicals as an audience member.

Programs

Band

Our SJC Band program is lead by Mr. Craig Hirotsuka also known as "Mr. H."   Mr. H teaches recorder as part of the music curriculum in Grade 3 as well as directing our beginning, intermediate, and advanced band ensembles.

Band is open to students in grades 4 to 8.  Beginning band students may choose:  flute, clarinet, trumpet or trombone.  Please talk with Mr. H. if you would like to play sax, drum, French horn, Baritone horn, or other wind instruments.

Drama

Drama at SJC is taught at lunchtime rehearsals and afterschool.  There are numerous opportunities for your child to express themselves through the dramatic arts here at SJC.  Our biggest theatrical event of the year, of course, is the annual Christmas Pageant - a fully costumed and choreographed show highlighting the students in grades 4, 5, and 6.

In addition, drama is used cross-curricularly in the 4th, 3rd, 2nd and 1st grade classrooms:

  • Grade 4 Geology Rocks!, Munchkin Mediation, Social Skills (alternating years)

  • Grade 3 Biomes!

  • Grade 2 Character Matters

  • Grade 1 American Symbols on Parade

As well, our 8th grade students have the opportunity to enact the story of our Blessed Mother and St. Juan Diego at the Parish's annual Our Lady of Guadalupe Mass.

Children's Music Ministry

Children’s Music Ministry is a great first experience for elementary-aged school children to become more fully involved in liturgy in a fun and welcoming environment. Children in grades 2 and up are invited to join the Children’s Music Ministry choir. (First graders may join if they have well-developed reading skills coupled with a strong attention span and will be considered on a case by case basis.) Please note that participation in and attendance at the monthly parish Children's liturgies is a requirement of being part of this group.

The Children’s Music Ministry choir leads the music at the 9:30 am Mass once a month during the school year and on Christmas Eve.  We rehearse on Thursday afternoons.

The SJC Talent Show

The SJC Talent and Variety show is a fun performing opportunity held every year featuring students from grades 1, 3, 5, 7 and 8. The SJC Talent and Variety show occurs annually in the Spring. Memorable acts from past years include choreographed basketball routines, juggling acts, comedy skits, dramatic monologues, ensemble dance routines, gymnastics, pianists, cellists, and vocalists performing songs from pop music, musical theatre, and opera. SJC has TALENT!
